Kathmandu, April 7 — A one-day symposium on “Nepal Studies in Russia” was held at the Russian House in Kathmandu on Tuesday, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Russia. The event was jointly organized by Shailee Theater and the Russian House.
The symposium brought together academics, artists, and stakeholders to discuss Nepal–Russia relations, with a focus on cultural, educational, and scholarly exchanges.
Addressing the program, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nepal, Rinchen Rakshaev, emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties through cultural diplomacy and academic collaboration. He noted that such exchanges have continued to play a significant role in deepening mutual understanding between the two countries.
Keynote speaker Jangab Chauhan highlighted the long-standing literary and cultural connections between Nepal and Russia. He recalled the historic visit of Laxmi Prasad Devkota to Moscow, describing it as a landmark moment in cultural diplomacy between the two nations. Chauhan also underlined the contribution of generations of Nepali students who studied in Russia in fields such as medicine, engineering, and management, stating that their expertise has significantly contributed to Nepal’s development upon their return.
He further stressed the importance of literature, education, and intellectual exchange in sustaining long-term bilateral relations and fostering deeper people-to-people connections.
During the symposium, Nabaraj Budhathoki presented on Russian plays staged by Shailee Theater, highlighting a 17-year collaboration with the Russian House. He noted that the staging of works by renowned Russian playwrights has served as an effective medium of cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
In her remarks, Director of the Russian House, Anastasia Khokhlova, congratulated Shailee Theater for its sustained efforts in promoting cultural collaboration. She also expressed appreciation to Chauhan for his insights and reaffirmed the Russian House’s commitment to strengthening educational and cultural ties between Nepal and Russia.
Khokhlova further stated that Russia remains ready to support Nepal’s development through cooperation in various sectors, while continuing to build on the long-standing partnership between the two countries.
